The connection that is being missed in the west between terrorism and despair is what
confuses the average Iranian citizen today. Americans, by and large, do not wish to see the poverty in their own midst, nor do they wish to have a connection with those who are less fortunate than themselves any stronger than the charities to which they contribute. In Iran, Islam connects all peoples despite the rifts that have been widened between Shi'a and Sunni Muslims in Iraq. The problems of Palestinian sovereignty, Jerusalem, and the perception that Terra's great powers have chosen Israel intractably are what is fueling the violent choices being made by suicide bombers and foreign
jihadis.
Among the people that I have spoken with in Tehran in the last 24 hours, most of them like the American people and are very curious about the "secular" government but they are angered and saddened by the choices America has made globally. Iraq to most of the men I talked with is a cautionary tale, "proof that Allah does treat the mighty just as he treats the weak," a middle aged taxi driver in eastern Tehran told me. "It was America's intention to drive a wedge through the Middle East, but the wedge was already there the whole time. Invading Iraq, killing that Sunni murdering dog Hussein and giving us a way in was a great gift from Allah."
Some of the tone was softer but still that vein of failure on the part of America because of policy not of military might rang true. "All of us, all of us Iranians know that America can destroy us, man, many times over. They will not do this because just as America needed the Communists in Russia as an adversary to justify all their illegal dealings around the world in the name of growing wealth, America will try to do the same thing to Islam." Smiling the cleric professor said, "they will try but at some point America will come to understand that like all greedy empires that follow the whisperings of Shai'tan, dust is their future."
To really understand the difference between Iran by day and Tran by night you only have to be invited to a house party in one of Tehran's affluent suburbs. Once inside the black cloths came off revealing Façonnable™ jeans and bright colored blouses and women and men sitting talking with each other about sex, politics, finances and yes the threats to the Iranian form of theocratic democracy. One young woman who is a student of mathematics at a large university in Tehran made a great point about how Iran is seen in America, "They think we want to be just like them. No we don't. We want to be Iranians. I would like to see a less strict group of Experts and a more moderate voice both as Supreme Leader and as President, but we do not need to be in the debt of the United States and have to give up the riches that we are blessed by Allah to have."
Many minds in Washington are already made up on this issue and have spoken to power their notions that Iran is ripe, like Iraq was, for regime change.

Now the conspiracy theorists about man walking on the moon will really go wild. Could this be because film analysis technology is so refined that someone could determine that the whole thing was shot at Paramount's back lot?

It would do Americans alot of good to watch what is
going on politically in Venezuela. Here is a two edged lesson in governance. When the elites no longer wield power over workers and peasants you can have an autocrat who rules in the name of the people during the phase of wealth redistribution. The second lesson is that this would never work in America no matter how moral the right thinks it is or how progressive the left thinks of itself.
Rendition blowback. Remember when Germany was an ally of the USA? The truth that will come out of this litigation, if it gets that far is that the CIA in the recent age is not what it was in the 1950s and 60s. The Chinese do alot better with HumInt than anyone else on Terra right now, even better than Mossad.

The race for the White House comes down to two things we don't yet know, who the Democratic nominee will be and who the GOP will settle for to be sacrificed at their feet. The coalition of Big Business and Big Religion has defiled their marriage. Without the 30% of fundies, Southern Baptists and others who cotton to the ideal that legislation is salvation the GOP just cannot win.
If Barack Obama is the candidate he can reach out to some western governor like Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas to be an anchor for his ascendancy. Diane Tomlinson
