Interesting choice of hero (Bush), villain (Chavez), dupes (Cindy Sheehan, Harry Belafonte, Danny Glover). There was a reason I never watched this putz -- he absolutely WORSHIPPED Bob Dole and John McCain -- and I watch all the Rachel Maddow youtubes I can get my hands on. This anti-Chavez rant was interesting not so much in the Chavez part of it because Chavez's sense of humor is not really intended for the Meshumedim. It's the Sheehan, Belafonte, Glover snark. I don't know about any of you, but by my lights those have been three pretty stand-up folks on politics. When it counted, I mean. Not when it was just wave a "Change" placard around and be done with it.
But, oye, Chaim Putz, President Chavez is a Venezolano. That's why his skin is slightly darker than yours. Other than him having a pretty normal mestizo complexion, what was so funny-looking about him? That he's a few pounds overweight? So, what? Is it that? I don't think I could have been either more direct about this or more polite. I warned the President-elect after each debate that there was no need to be so lippy about this. Quite the contrary.
If you're going to be an advocate for the disadvataged and there's a good trading partner who has been willing to take fiscal burdens off the state budgets by giving away home heating oil, why mess it up. If you're going to make difficult to impossible promises to keep about "investment" in green energy technology and you can piggy-back onto your trading partner's advancements in that area at no cost to the Treasury instead of $15 BN/yr, why so lippy? To look masculine to Arnold Schwarzenegger? I almost fuckin believe that's true. This wasn't supposed to be what you were about, because you could train with the Navy Seals twice a week for the rest of your presidency and you're not going to be tougher than Chavez or Medvedev.
It would be like trying to open a can of beans with a flexi-straw.

I don't agree with Joe Lieberman. I think three of Obama's choices were good (Gregory Craig, Eric Holder, Janet Napolitano). I think the rest range from mediocre to dangerous and I kind of toss Napolitano out anyway because I think the Department Of Fatherland Security is pretty fuckin redundant and a huge waste of taxpayer money in the midst of a fiscal and monetary crisis. I'll give Obama credit for this day. Everything he did and said made him seem like a vague, uninformed, passive jackass. Until I am SHOWN by ACTIONS differently, I see a president with George W. Bush's economic policies and John McCain's foreign policies. Dennis Kucinich, Ron Paul, Howard Dean, Barbara Lee, Bernie Sanders, Linda Sanchez, Sheila Jackson-Lee, Sheldon Whitehouse, et. al., are easy to ignore. Hugo Chavez and Dmitriy Medvedev, not so much.
I calls 'em like I sees 'em and the USA's President-elect looked like a FOLLOWER while Chavez and Medvedev looked like LEADERS.

I have always called myself a socialist. I was thrilled with the election of Chavez. Putin scares me a little, but that may be ignorance on my part. But I have never understood our terror of democratically elected governments with a different economic system. What's up with our neurotic hatred of Castro? But you are writing with so much more knowledge of the realities there, that I feel way out of my league to even try to talk about this. But I do believe that what the right wants to do with Cuba is turn it back into the lovely tropical whorehouse it was when my dad liked to got there in the thirties and forties. My favorite fragrance is called Habanita. I swear I smell like a Cuban whore. I can't buy it here, but my friend in Costa Rica finds it for me along with his Cuban cigars.

If he is a dictator, then please tell me why he wins his elections by 8 points and not 80? Do you realize that in this recent election the people of the capital, Caracas, voted in an opposition candidate as mayor.
Chavez is a budget-balancing and anti-inflation obsessive. His country is just so rich and has such a huge surplus and no debt that he is able to provide such a generous social sector for the poor, working and middle-classes without hurting the budget or causing inflationary pressure.
That is TEXTBOOK modern economics.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch Bush, Paulson and Obama are overseeing the destruction of the capitalist system as we know it. Mr Change blathers on and on about "investment in sustainable clean energy" and da da da.
Venezuela and Brazil ALREADY HAVE IT. Bush and Obama don't dislike Chavez because he's a socialist. They dislike him because he's a capitalist.
The great tragedy of this period when historians look back will be that Democrats found Obama better looking than Dennis Kucinich. And Republicans were more enchanted with McCain's bullshit war hero fairy tales than with a real conservative, Ron Paul.
The right doesn't want Cuba to be anything other than it is now. A moribund Populist Dictatorship. It's such a perfect distraction, though. Otherwise, it's a fucking irrelevancy. It will take 20 years to turn it into a productive economy.
Cuba serves the right the same purpose that Roe V Wade does. It's a fund-raising tool. Nothing more. And anything Russia or Venezuela does regarding Cuba is only to piss of the USA. They know where the action is: IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES.

(For the record, I have been a Chavez fan for a long while. He has done more to help the poor in the USA - Big Sammy (God, I love that) -- than just about any in my adult lifetime.)

Obama actually can rise or fall on how he handles South America and the FSU. Fuck the Middle East. Fuck China. Europe is too complicated for any American to deal with. You've studied French culture. I've lived in Spain three times and in England once. These cultures are just too old and there are too many nuances to understand. And 1000s of years of history.
If Obama can't explain what a real interest rate is, how is he going to understand the effects that linger today in England of the Norman Conquest?
Latino cultures are a little easier because they're kind of like Europe with about 800 years of history sliced off. The wrinkle is in the colonial vs post-colonial transition.
Problem is that one of the things I thought he'd be great at, cross-cultural nuance -- Obama sucks at.
He's demonstrated with Chavez that he has absolutely no sense of Latino culture at all. He's so misreading Chavez it's absurd. He's looking at Chavez like he's a Mexican day laborer or something and he's somehow beneath Obama.
Meanwhile, he doesn't realize that the guy is very well educated and has one of the best economic minds of any head-of-state in the world, plus he has a great sense of humor and relates fantastic to every other world leader.
How's Obama going to deal with Balbina Herrera or Michelle Bachelet? Those are two very complex and poltically canny women. Much more difficult to read than Chavez and in a lot of ways much tougher.
Obama's life, skin color notwithstanding, has been Disneyland compared to Herrera's and Bachelet's even though they're very different.
Herrera was born in the worst slums you can imagine and worked her way up to the leader of the ruling PRD by brains and force of will. Again, Obama will read her for a Chicana housekeeper or something. Meanwhile, she herself is a huge Metallica and AC/DC fan and can move in any social circles with ease.
Her daughter is an attorney and is regarded as the best political strategist in Panama.
Bachelet comes from an upper-class French family of left wing politicians but when Allende fell Pinochet killed her father and put her in the rape chambers for three years. She's a bar of iron. Completely fearless, hidden behind an elegant facade. But she will dropkick you if you're not careful.
Then, there's Fernando Lugo, President of Paraguay. First leftist to beat a Duarte or Stroessner ever. He used to be a Catholic Bishop but got ex-communicated by Pope Rat for preaching Jesuit Revolution Theology.
You see now what kind of leaders we have? Obama's story is a joke to these folks. They look at him as a weak gringo. They're ready to work with him they way they did with Clinton but if he cops a shit attitude, do they care that he's the first African-American president of the US? It's totally irrelevant. 1/3 of this continent is African. What's the big deal?
How can Obama deal with Slavic cultures? You're part Slav, right? I'm not Slavic but I'm Russian Jewish and I've lived in Moscow, so I have a pretty good idea of it. One thing you NEVER do is show a Slav all this cheerful "can-do" American optimism. It's about the worst cultural faux-pas in Slavic countries there is.
And while Latinos laugh at the whole "American Exceptionalism" thing, it makes Slavs insanely angry.
In all fairness, McCain and Palin would have been hopeless. Obama just needs some practice and to be a little more modest and to open his mind and read the signs. Question is: does he care enough to make the effort?
