ADMIN AND ODDMENTS

With Craig, Holder, Daschle, and Napolitano* in the books, and guessing Vilsack for Agriculture and Gibbs for Press Secretary, and Admiral Mullen staying on, PAIN and I are tied wtht the same four (AG Holder, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Press Gibbs, Joint Chiefs Mullen). UpdateL Kelso gets kind of a bad beat in the Commerce Secretary vetting as #1 pick Penny Pritzker falls based upon family business practices in Ohio. Good read by Kelso, going for the Right-Wing Republican, didn't know what sort of a jackpot Jay, et. al., were in. PAIN stays alive in the category with her choice of Kansas Governor Kathleen Sibelius.

In other cabinet doings, both PAIN and Kelso got blanked on Hemispheric Advisor and White House Counsel with #1 State-Hemispheric choice, Greg Craig going to the Counsel's office. Henry Waxman's replacement of John Dingell as House Engery Committee Chair is great for the USA and the world environment and, down the road for UAW and manufacturers as well, but it tosses a spanner into the works on Kelso's other great read Phil Scilirio (Waxman's C-o-S) for Energy Secretary. Based upon a kind of facile MSM "Lincoln" reading of Obama's staffing, two strong environmentalists at key energy posts is a shaky propositioin. Probably Scilirio stays with Waxman or joins private sector. PAIN's pick, Penna Gov Ed Rendell for Energy Dept looked fanciful and something of a goofy party gamble before, now looks kind of strong. With Obama's strong coal focus, Rendell's Harrisburg and coaltown connections plus his experience in big trade union issues might well make him the new John Dingell in this Cabinent rather than in the House. Good analysis by both of us.

*Obama's excellent choice of Arizona Governor Janet Napoitano for Director Of Homeland Security may be in trouble because of one bizarre reason and one typical reason, both reasons having to do with the problem in selecting a mellow person for that job. Napolitano, quite rationally, recused herself as US Attorney from prosecuting Cindy McCain for drug violations, theft and forgery, so as to remove any political questions, but even though she wanted to be fair to a political opponent, that opponent and his party is likely to use the "soft-on-crime" canard. Morever, while Napolitano survived an Republican inquiry when she was put up for US Attorney by Clinton, because of her having represented Anita Hill as a private attorney, expect that to come back as a "meme" of anti-male, or anti-Republican or possibly even the revolting "high tech lyniching" of Thomas's will bring absurd charges of racism against her.

PAIN stays alive with James Lee Witt. Kelso in a very bizarre Freudian episode given his synesthesia, FORGOT TO MAKE A HOMELAND SECURITY DIRECTOR choice!!! Wonder why? Off the top of the head, Kelso fills in with Bill Bratton.

Kelso's choice of Valerie Jarrett as HUD Secretary goes down as Obama taps her for Senior White House Aide. PAIN remains alive with US Rep James Clyburn (D-SC) for the HUD job. The possible choice of HRC for State may put paid to Kelso's free pick of Bill Clinton to American Embassy in China. PAIN very live with likely 2nd choice for State Senator John Kerry. Kelso less so with likely #3 choice Former Senator Sam Nunn.

Former Senate Majority Leader Daschle for Health and Human Services buries both Kelso's guess of Sibelius and PAIN's blank for the category. PAIN and Kelso both correctly read Dean as not a contender for that job, though PAIN sees Dean freeze-out and Kelso sees Dean as FDA Chief, though the rumors going around are that the freeze-out is a huge favorite, with DFA Obama opponent second choice, and a possible run for Jr NY Senate Seat if HRC goes for State job a possibility.

Axelrod gets spot as Seniior White House aide but neither Kelso no PAIN had offered an opinion. That "my friends, you betcha" is the state of nature at this "point in time." [Expletive Deleted!]

Attention Valeri Dubov: if it turns out that Winona Ryder's mystery plane illness was brought on by illegal drungs and she's convicted or pleads guitly, it's my impression that would be her third felony conviction and it would require her to serve the rest of her life in prison without the possibility of parole. Update: Scenery Chewer, occasional thief and occasional law-and-order zerlot, Winona (Horowitz) Ryder apparantly over-dosed on a combination of legal benzodiazipines and alcohol on the airplane. No crime committed. Two felony convictions remain on books, but she's spared a lifetime in Stoney Lonesome -- THIS TIME.

This is the famous KKK-and-yer-Out law which she, Representative (then California State Attorney General ) and recent Repulbican party leadership failure, Dan Lundgren, aa well as Marc Klaas campaigned for and got. As I recall, the first successful KKK-and-yer-out con's third felony was stealing a slice of pizza. Handshakes, apparently, all around including Ms Ryder.

Digby's Hullaballoo http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/ brings three lovely top items today. A piece on Cokie Roberts's adovcacy of the TV-Q rating possibilities for Mooselini, suggesting that the Biker Bitch might be the White Oprah. If there's a person on this earth I find more loathesome than Sarah Palin, it's Cokie Roberts. The sound of her voice makes me ill. Plus, there used to be that insipid syndicate column she and her husband woould co"write." It was always family-oriented and her husband, strong Jewish folkloric dancer, may or may not have leant a real hand. The Howard Stern show's Stuttering John could never get a staight answer out of Cokie as to whether or not she herself was Jewish. Cokie "wrote" a best-selling parenting book called "How to Raise G-Rated Children In Ron Jeremy's World" or whatever the fuck it was called.

I'm ok with Oprah except for the Dr Phil part. Biker bitch is no Oprah. No way.

That post is followed by a freak out by Kathleen Parker because as we predicted Obama won the Jewish vote 78-20-[2] and it's starting to look like Theocratic Authoritarianism isn't the way to go but the R's seem to have lost the other playbooks.

Then, there's a beaut on financial journalist Amity Shlaes who almost ruined Paul O'Neill's tenure at Treasury not that he had a portfolio other than to chauffeur Bono around Africa. This piece is followed by another figure who's "mentally ill-from Amityville," Bachmann Turner Overdrive or whatever the fuck she's called.

El Espiritu De La Escalera

Signs from weak economy, appointment of Gregory Craig as White House Counsel to Democratic Congressional control point to a phasing out of the "War On Narcoterrorism," Plan Colombia, portion of USAID money, leaving only the infrastructure and development portion. With Ingrid Betancourt safe in France and all sides and Andean actors looking to get peace process started much to the chagrin of President Alvaro Uribe, as his power appears to be fading with Barack Obama's rise. Another reason to love the election of President Barack Obama. BBC article with capsule description of three main groups in civil war.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4528631.stm

Another with "tough talk" by Colombian government aimed at Obama:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7738709.stm

A final one showing the Obama adminstration's and Democratic Party's Plan Colombia skepticism:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4627185.stm

Further sign of Obama's strength, sentencing of two of 11 Paramilitaries extradited to the US on the eve of their participation in a Chavez-Uribe arranged truth-and-reconciliation meeting. More than half of the 11 will face US federal charges. The others' whereabouts are unknown, suggesting a US Plan Colombia military participation in disrupting that effort.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7662580.stm

What's it all about. Plan Colombia is about the USA, the Paramilitaries and the Colombian army controlling the imporation of cocaine into the US, as opposed to the FARC or the ELN exporting to Europe. Either way it's ending up in Mexico as the middle-man with disastrous consequences. The incoming Obama adminsitration seems to be doing all the right things in preparation for a new, non-military arrangement with the final two right-wing states, Colombia and Peru. When Obama's good, he's very very good!

i never said any of it was about ME. i chose to disagree with you on certain issues. you SAY you welcome disagreement, discussion, back and forth. yet you chose (and have chosen many times in the past) to respond to me with condescension, bullying and personal attacks.

you like comments, as long the commentors agree with you. at least that's been the bulk of my experience with you on the more controversial issues.

So, yeah, like really want to make my "voice heard in Hell by commenting at The Dis Brimstone-Daily Pitchfork!"

No thanks. I won't subject myself to your verbal abuse any more, Dahlink.

It's a pub debate, dear. Your comment was full of barbs and I took it in that spirit which is why I gave you and all ahead full albeit exhaustive and serious answer.

In the pub debate format one holds the floor and uses whatever forensic tools are in his or her kit in the moment and does his or her best to get off the best roarks and to finesse and trap.

This is not new between us.

You placed little darts all around with a symphony of different moves leading up to your grand finale.

I decided the howitzer approach was best to see how far you'd go and how serious you wanted to play at. But I too set my little more finessed traps here and there.

I'll review it bit by bit with you if you like but that's silliness.

This is a familiar game we've played for years and I take no offense and assume neither do you. If you want to be the best, ou have to beat the best and you are one of the very best.

Still haven't met a more intellectually gifted and widely informed person than you are. And I still get kind of choked up thinking of those vintage Asbury Park photos, the Italian Ice and that breakfast buffet place. And those ancient people and the weak church lemonade!

I've always said you have the hightest IQ of anyone I know. Perhaps, your comment, too, is part of the game. Who knows? You are very clever and have a wealth of information and many gears.

This is just jackin around with blog BS, though, not real life.

Let's take serious things seriously. And silly things with a laugh. You know you can count on me to have you back at any time for any reason. I just can't go up there for a while. I'm not bullshitting about that part.

But if you're jammed up you know you can always call me or email me day or night.

But for real, I didn't swear at you. I remembered then included the Wanda Sykes stuff you sent to flesh out my argument a little better. Would I really have referred to DICK NIXON if I were angry?

jeez, we all gave it to each other harder on the show last week about Phil Leftwich and Seneca Wallace as college quarterbacks!

Hi Kelso;

Winona Ryder in the slammer for life? I know the three strikes law is being used but I'll believe it when I see it with her.

Now if she were living in Watts or Compton or East LA, she would be screwed.

I am planning to do a post based on a couple of comments you made in regard to financial goings on and the post will be 99% your comments.

I plan to title it is "Is Kelso's Nuts really nuts, you decide"

It will be in good taste with a few links here.

I am running about 250 visitors and 450 page views a day, which is not much in this world but may help both of us.

Considering I started with 6 views a day two months ago, that is not bad.

Let me know if it is OK with you.

eh, it's OK Kelso. Not to worry. We're OK. I was in a venting mode and now I'm out of it. I know you mean no harm to me. Hey, we agree on lots of stuff, even Cokie Roberts. And I guess I do take things a tad personally. I was there when you had to leave for Panama. I certainly understand your anger. But sometimes when it comes screaming out over the internets it feels really, really burning and hot. It's NOT directed at me, but I flip out a little. My problem, not yours.

Your friend,

anitaxanaxnow

PS ... and, hey, Winona Ryder OD'd on Xanax!!! Guess she won't be going to jail. She probably was mixing them with alcohol, it's hard to OD on benzo's without alcohol.

You can pretty much swallow 50 1mg benzos without booze and just sleep for a week. My great-uncle tried to top himself after his wife died with 50 valium and all he got was the best sleep of his life because he doesn't drink!

ICHABOD: It's your site, write whatever you want, but remember than I took those posts very seriously and wrote about finance from an applied and scholarly perspective. I didn't make any jokes or use Anglo-Saxon oaths or anything like that.

Bassically, I used a neo-Keynesian fiscal argument, a Fisherite monetary argument, some Milton Friedman, some Theory Of Speculative Markets, some Theory Of Corporate Finance and some basic GAAP.

Call it whatever you want, but to make it like I'm a crank based upon what I wrote on your blog wouldn't really be all that descriptive. It wouldn't be a quesiton of whether I was "nuts" or not "nuts". It would be a question of whether a reader agreed with the theory and praxis.

But it's your blog, not mine.

I just wanted to make a snarky comment about it being a shame that Ron Jeremy won't have a place in an Obama administration and I come into a sky full of fireworks.

Monsieur Kelso, I thought this show was next week. Didn't you say Turkey Day? I might be going senile.

@ GRAVES:

1) No fireworks. AnitaXanaxNow are very dear friends from way back. We have quarrels now and again. It's all forgotten and forgiven. We never stay angry at each other. We're both moody and neurotic people.

2) My error on the sex show being on Dallas Cowboys As Lambs To The Slaughter Day. Sex show is tonight. Although it would be the ironic roark of all time, i'm not going to adopt a HOMOPHOBIC posture!

Hi Kelso;

Your point is well taken and I will change the title accordingly.

The reason I am posting them is I think that they were serious and well written and extremely informative.

It is rare we get the real opinion and layout from someone who knows.

Thanks

Sorry about the misunderstanding :)

Blogger KELSO'S NUTS said...

ICHABOD: No misunderstanding. I like to vary up what I do. Most of the time here I do a mix of the serious and what the telegraph-wire calls "snark" (I prefer the Irish words "roark" or "craic" better).

When I go to your "house" I'm careful to respect your rules and keep it thoughtful, without jokes or foul language. So, I was surprised that you'd frame my views of the various crises that way, but you surely have the right to make whatever puns you like on your own blog!

I'm not one to go running to my mother or the sheriff!

Hi Kelso;

Not to belabor an issue, but after thinking about this discourse I put myself in your shoes and I realized how tasteless that stupid headline really was as compared to how you respect the readers of my blog.

I have to say I made a mistake and I apologize for it.

Sometimes I write or say something not always realizing what or how it may be taken.

I value you comments and perspective highly and your articles on this blog.

Regards

Blogger KELSO'S NUTS said...

ICHABOD: Please don't worry about this, buddy. Call it whatever you like. Once I commented it's in the public domain. I don't get insulted that easily.

I think your original headline's kind of cool, actually. I only object to it because it's hard enough to get blog readers to wade through involved comments about business, economics and finance anyway. So, if you start off framing it like I'm some kind of shut-in nut-case, there's even less of an incentive for readers to take rather mainstream ideas seriously.

The stuff IS over a lot of peoples' heads as simplfied as I've tried to make it. So, create an idea at the outset that there's something cognitively wrong with ME, and you give readers a reason either not to read the collection you're putting together or to make stupid jokes.

If I were assured of an economically-literate audience, your original headline would be PERFECT.
