THE WORLD TURNS UPSIDE DOWN

As I always respond to everyone who calls me "crazy" and says "I don't know what I'm talking about" or "I never understand a word you write" or "You're lying," DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH THEN.

He are some a priori jumping-off points for you.

Do not, I repeat DO NOT dispute me until you have read all of this.

The United States is at a civil liberties cross-roads right only NOW instead of with passage of first USA PATRIOT ACT because the Bush Administration and certain senators like John Ensign (R-NV) and the odious Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are completely right on the issue of "oil speculation" NOT being the root cause of high gasoline prices in the US.

Melanie Morgan and John McCain are absolutely WRONG that anything Bush says an impact on the price of crude oil. We've written it before. Crude oil markets are random-variables, distributed log-normally, and this obey mean-variance behavior, meaning that what seems like large short-term changes are optical illusions. The high-level of crude prices and the high-volatility in crude markets can create big swings --$10/day either way. The natural-logarithms of the changes would not be different if oil were $30/bbl.

Melanie Morgan is just a nobody, however, who probably didn't finish high school. John McCain has never been the sharpest knife in the drawer so I don't blame them for falling for and participating in a talking-points campaign shell game. I expect a little better from Democratic Senators. I expected a lot WORSE from the Bush Administration but as the text of the NPR report shows, Republican senators Ensign (R-NV) and McConnell (R-KY) as well as the administration through the silly voice of Dana Perino are all absolutely right on this issue.

Speculators are not to blame for your prices at the pump. Speculators create a market in which energy producers and consumers may contract to exchange cash for these essential inputs. The "speculators" settle in cash.

Look, I'm sick of this. America is either a capitalist-democratic-republic or it isn't. End of story. If it isn't, then what is it? Fascist? National Sociatlist (Nazi)? Soviet Communist? What is it to be? What is to be done?

Please, someone smarter, please tell me. Because I'm lost. I generally respect George Soros. Will someone tell me how a survivor of both Hitler and Stalin and himself one of the most aggressive f/x market participants in the world now so simon-pure that butter wouldn't melt in is mouth. The Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK of 1992-93 would not agree. But Sterling weakness was not George Soros's fault then. He was a market actor, rationally acting when he perceived poor monetarily policy on the part of the Bank Of England and the Major government in general.

These votes are very easy to take. Republicans want to avoid acknowledging the role instability in the Middle East and fucked-up fiscal and monetary policy of theirs play in encouraging traders to take long positions in commodities futures markets, energy especially. Democrats like the idea of avoiding confronting their own complicity and instead finding as easily identifiable scapegoat in a weak economy: THE WEALTHY OIL SPECULATOR.

Ensign and McConnell are absolutely right. The markets would shift out of Chicago and New York toward England and Canada. They wouldn't put it this way, but the reason is -- please feel free to steal this phrase of MINE -- "People do not stop doing something they love and are good at because of some punk-ass law." They find domestic work-arounds or ex-patriate. Capitalism finds a way.

That's the material effect. The Big Sammy Philolosphical aspect to it is some bizarre love of TAKING AWAY RIGHTS OF AMERICANS whenever possible. Both parties love it.

How weird is it today that erstwhile villains like Ensign, McConnell and the administration are for rights and everyone else is against them? I know that they value rights of "business" more than civil rights but this "oil speculation" thing is where rights of "business" and rights of people who are the ultimate beneficiaries of the right to trade energy intersect.

You take your bedfellows where you can get them. Fill in your own ideas about "them first coming for the 'bass-fishermen'"....or what the term "oil speculator" connotes. But lest anyone think this is an advocacy for McCain or an abandonment of my continental-and-in-shore drilling agnoticism or an attack on Obama, think again. Nothing's changed there. Any new quandrants released by the US goverment still go up for auction and if Elf-Aquitaine outbids Chevron, tough tit. If Chevron finds refinery capacity locally (and that includes PEMEX and COMMUNIST CITGO, assholes!) inadaquate, and they have to sell on the ICE instead of NYMEX or the MERC, again, tough tit for flag-pin dudes.

In an ideal world, Barack Obama would agree with me on this and be four-square for civil rights and civil liberties. The world's topsy-turvy right now. Everyone's got a finger in the wind and looking for an edge as usual. And, of course, the Barr-McKinney or McKinney-Barr fusion ticket would have this covered in a more sensible way than Obama or McCain have access to. I still don't need Obama to be a hero. Just to dial it fuckin down on the rest of the world for long enough to take a fuckin nap or something.

Ensign, McConnell, and Bush failed miserably on an identical issue in 2006. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. They crushed a home-grown industry and turned commerical banks into COPS. Any Anti-Oil Speculation will crush another home-grown industry and make investment banks into COPS.

If that's not a beaker with fascism, Nazism and Stalinism in a sulphuric acid base, I don't know what is.

Attention: GARY'S_BONER--did any of the "Mid-town-Electronics-Stores," "Shoe-spitting, Coke-pissing," or "Taliban-fighter-at-the-Jewish-kiosk" jokes make it into the final script of the ZOHAN movie?

GO FOR BAROQUE AGAINST PASCAL

FREE Diane Tomlinson! FREE Cavalor Epþiþ!

Neither violated the spirit of the law. As the only LIVING editor here, I have to speak out. I, personally, took Tommy-Gun's words even as regards this subject as part of a larger allegory, not as fact. I can't speak for any other living human but the subject of the existence of an afterlife or lack thereof remains subject to debate. Anything "revealed" by Diane Tomlinson is taken in that spirit. Dante's Inferno is taken in that spirit. Bruce Jay Friedman's Steambath is taken in that spirit. All of the relgious texts and the work of scientists such as Einstein, Jastrow and Sagan are taken in that spirit.

Despite being the living Terran with the closest ties to HELL, I don't read accounts of Hellac existence as fact. I read them as allegory with the hope that it is as set forth in THE DAILY PITCHFORK. If my words and deeds on Terra allow me one day to enjoy betting with the BM at Vulca (tm) while enjoying that monster size Quahog kind of thing done Cassino-style, much the better. If it's an eternity of nothingness, too bad for me. If it's as the Evangelical Extremists say, I've got a little problem or two!

If Diane Tomlinson is guilty then neither accounts of going's on in Vulca (tm) nor Chef Odomo's recipes are permissable for living Terrans to read either. Best to close up shop.

But what good would that serve? The investigator, Mr Yuri Melich, makes no reference to any of Tomlinson's words nor does the prosecutor. The inquiry will go forward as all such inquiries go. A trial in state court, if held, will not even allow Tomlinson's words into the record. No harm done.

But I write for myself. To quote Austin Pendleton's phrase as the gangster Julian Healy in the movie, Dirty Work: "speak, Human."

Thanks for the very nice comments on my indefinite departure. I'd be more than happy to fulfill your wish regarding Powell. But while I have my own reasons for thinking he's a douche, I'd be more interested in learning yours. I'll do a nice, big, fat FUCKTARD post just for you over at Jonestown. But first I want to hear your detailed argument for why Powell gets the whole fucktard enchilada.

SR: You ever see the movie SHOAH? If one thing is made clear through the full 8 hours of that movie, it's that it was a CAUSE carried out with precision by the Germans but the post-1939 Poles did it for fun.

Bush: Who knows how involved in any of this he was? He's a dumb jock with great political skills who was as comfortable running to Gore's left in 2000 as he has been governing as Stalin. It's a War Crime "first offense," anyway.

Cheney: Unpleasant, callous, greedy, affectless. He's never been a huge war CHEERLEADER. Maybe just a guy who made sure the bungs and the backhanders came his way and would keep coming his way. Also, a War Crime "first offense."

Rumsfeld: Has had something of the dedicated public servant in him in the past. Was far from the most reactionary member of Ford's cabinet. Nowhere near as greedy as Cheney; the Searle stock was plenty for him. His tortured press-conferences followed by his apologia in 2006 suggest he was not a leader but rather led into all this somewhat against his will.

Rove: Political animal. Nothing more. Nothing less. Cindy Sheehan could probably hire him for the right price to help her knock of Pelosi in the primary.

POWELL: A bright guy who has always known what he does is wrong yet keeps on doing it. Where there's war crime, you'll find Colin Powell: My Lai, the "dirty Wars" in Latin America, Iran-Contra, Operation "Just Cause" in Panama, Iraq I (which is a close question, but...) and Iraq 2.

The man obviously digs the Eichmann defense and the whole chain-of-command thing. You could write off his effort to coverup My Lai to a need for some medals and advancement. You can write off Iran-Contra and Iraq I because he wasn't in charge and while he's a hypocrite, both are close moral questions.

I think he should be serving quadruple-life in Belgium for Operation Just Cause in which 10,000 Panamanian civilians were killed, 100,000 made homeless, dense urban neighborhood bombed in tests of toys to be employed in Iraq I, plus he allowed his troops to terrorize the city, deface Catholic churches (because Noriega had sanctuary in one of them) and basically do their "Rebel Yell" thing.

Iraq 2. Simple. He brought a vial of talcum powder to the United Nations and lied the US into a war. Bush only said what was written for him. Powell was fuckin into it. Warrior-Diplomat. Jeez. What's better?

THE POWELL DOCTRINE: Send in massive force, kill them all and get the children, too. Or did I miss something and somehow the media and Democrats are right spinning the "Powell Doctrine" as something "humanitarian"?

"Dirty Wars" Shits and giggles for Powell between important duties. What's a few Argentine and Chilean Jews and leftists between friends if you bio shows on THC every Black History Month?

Somehow, the great champion of the Black man in America and the "only in America story guy" was pretty deaf when Jacobo Timerman and Ariel Dorfman risked life and limb to get the real stories into the press. Powell had "other" priorities. Like finding the next American Nazi ass to kiss.

In sum, Powell is the fucktard because he's a six-time loser on these things, a repeat War felon, he obviously knows better given his rather left-wing speech on criminal justice at the RNC of 2000, and there's a decent chance he'll be joining Obama's foreign policy team. Brzezinski and Lake work fine for me. Powell dragging Obama into more and more war doesn't play.

The guy -- especially given his special "doctrine" -- just loves war and pain and maiming and suffering and civilian death. It's more offensive that he's now trying to distance himself from the policy he was key in implementing. And enjoyed to the utmost.

He's the past-master of blatant hypocrisy. He was happy to jam-up Clinton in a no-win situation in Somalia. He avoids the subject of the Sudan like the plague. He stuck around long enough to queer-bait Clinton on "don't-ask-don't-tell" and is right there to SUPPORT "don't-ask-don't-tell" when the war commitment has pretty much thrown that shit out the window in search of as many warm bodies to put in uniform. He may have marvelously commpassionate views about the ethnic-group he self-identifies with, but he hates him some gays and lesbians as bad as Jerry Falwell did.

And...he stuck around Clinton's adminstration long enough to do mischief but not long enough to lend a hand in Bosnia-Herzogovina. First spilling of blood he's avoided that I can tell. Well, if it's Clinton as president the same rules NEVER apply.

I think the Powell Black-History-Month Bio stays up if and only if the Jewish History Month gets adoring bios of "The Brain" Rothstein, the real-life counterparts of the Runyon figures Dave The Dude, Jew Louie, and The Lemon Drop Kid, Dutch Schultz, Meyer Lansky, Manny Kimmel, old man Bronfman, old man Schenley, Waxey Gordon, Bugsy Siegel, and every Whitechapel gang who fought the Krays and lost in the 60s. Jeez, those guys were brutes but did they kill 900 amongst them? Did they target civilians? Did they go after rivals' children? No. No. 1000x, no.

Besides, those gangsters were more and less sociopathic but ultimately it was the money. Powell doens't even make any money except for his corporate speeches.

HE KILLS FROM A DISTANCE, FOR FUN.

"Dumb as a box of rocks"?

I still don't have a fuckin Spanish keyboard. Go figure.

"It's a big step, Tom" [US ARMY]

"You can play me now or pay me later." [FRAM OIL FILTERS]

"Minty 'Happy Days' for you younger fellers just startin out." [SKOAL]

Clase uno-A, si o no?
