But that's the sex element. As this IS hell, and Kelso has already taken you by the hand into the dark corner of how to profit honestly on the coming Sub Prime Repackage disaster, let Uncle Kelso add just bit more darkness. DRUGS. Along with class, the other taboo subject in America, no? Sure, we've all got sob stories of this friend and that one, but how much science on the subject does there have to be before this crazy drug paranoia stops. Every single human being is born with the NEED to alter his or her state of mind from time to time. The most accessible book for the layman on this subject was written by a research scientist named Robert or Richard Siegel, I believe.
Alcohol is legal. Cocaine is not. Pills are in between. These are arbitrary distinctions. It's a question of dopamine and seratonin levels, not morality. I happen to think that there's enough pressure on these poplets at a young age to drain plenty of seratonin and dopamine from their systems. Doesn't excuse La Spears's neglecting her child but that's not what were talking about. THE HELLIONS have to LEAD not FOLLOW on this issue.
"OOOH-WOOOH, DRUGS" is just as bad as "OOOH-WOOH FAGS, NIGGERS, MEXICANS..." And as just as Sam Harris makes the point that "moderate" religion is an enabling force of extremism, I am of the belief that the marijuana advocates perform the same function in thE discussion. There are some of us like myself who are physically incapable of tolerating THC. But that doesn't mean I don't need a dopamine or seratonin boost sometimes. This same middle ground argument obtains in the current climate of gambling prohibiton. There is a "Poker: good, sports betting: evil" contingent that performs the same enabling function for the Nazi state as the marijuana proponents do.
But all of the above is interesting as an appetizer but not really germane to your point, which I wholeheartedly support. And I have a little story which dovetails nicely with LordCantharidin's "capitalism" post.
Sometime in 1993 I was at Hollywood Park racetrack with friend and they began playing the national anthem over the PA. Steve and I naturally didn't stand up but we noticed everyone else standing, most with caps off, hands over hearts, singing.
Steve says to me: "when I used to see this I'd get all upset about how people are sheep and nothing's going to change...now I just wonder 'why aren't i rich?'"
